In 2009: more than 5.500 operations ...
Thanks to the Inauguration of our own clinic in the city, "Fernando de la Mora" has the number of the patient admissions and of the operations increased and thus achieve optimal result.
En el año 2009 la Fundación Visión ha tenido la oportunidad de devolver la visión a miles de personas
Con muchos desafios pero con gran entusiasmo el año 2009 ha sido portador de crecimiento y esfuerzo, donde pese a la crisis mundial no agena a Paraguay, la Fundación Visión ha realizado más de 90.400 consultas y superado las cifras de 5.500 cirugías de ojos a pacientes con recursos limitados en distintos puntos del país.
Se pudo dar una mayor respuesta a la demanda, gracias a la habilitación del local propio y de la apertura del quirofano, el cual dispone una gran capacidad para ofrecer mayor cantidad de cirugias (hasta 100 por día)
La Fundación Visión realizó exitosas campañas de cirugías de catarata durante el mes de Noviembre/09
La Fundación Visión realizó dos campañas de cirugías durante el mes de noviembre de 2009. La primeracampaña se realizó en Asunción del 9 al 13 d e noviembre. En esta campaña se operaron 223 cirugías y 1049 consultas. La segunda campaña se realizó en Campo 9 entre el 23 y el 27 de noviembre. Allí se operaron 134 personas y se hicieron 721 consultas.
Fundación Visión celebrates World Sight Day
On the occasion of World Sight Day to be celebrated on October 8th, Fundación Visión will be performing free cataract surgeries for people over 80 years of age or who are blind in both eyes due to cataracts. It is important that those who are interested come to our clinic to have an appointment and include their names on the surgery list. World Sight Day is organized by VISION 2020 (of which Fundación Visión is a member) and by the World Health Organization. On this day, which is held every second Thursday of October, the organizations and institutions that are involved in the prevention and cure of blindness celebrate their efforts throughout the world. Dorotee Duerksen celebrates her birthday with the employees of the Fundación Visión
Dorotee Duerksen, daughter of the executive director of Fundación Visión - Dr. Rainald Duerksen – recently has been working in different departments of Fundación Visión, which has enabled her to meet many people who work for the organization. On August 15, Dorotee wanted to celebrate her sixteenth birthday by inviting all of the employees to a luncheon that, in addition to food and prayer, had volleyball, soccer and dancing with Christian hip-hop. This celebration was a nice opportunity for recreation and visiting with friends. Thank you, Dorotee!
Successful cataract surgery campaigns during the month of July
Fundación Visión conducted two surgery campaigns during the month of July. The first of these happened in the city of Coronel Oviedo between the 20th and the 23rd of July, during which 64 cataract surgeries were performed. The second campaign took place in Asunción between the 27th and the 30th of July and 122 patients had operations.
The Asunción campaign had extensive coverage by radio stations and newspapers such such as La Nación , Ultima Hora , ABC Color.
Fundación Visión at the 2009 World Mennonite Convention
Fundación Visión participated actively in the World Mennonite Convention that was celebrated in Asunción between the 14th and the 19th of July of 2009. Fundación Visión had a stand at which the work of the Fundación was spread and publicized.
The meeting of professionals in the area of healthcare (July 15th and 16th) took place during the World Mennonite Convention. The above-mentioned meeting took place in the auditorium of the new Fundación Visión clinic and the director, Dr. Rainald Duerksen, was one of the speakers. Among others, there was a presentation about the work that Fundación Visión has carried out in association with communities such as Yalve Sanga and with healthcare institutions such as the Mennonite Hospital Km 81 and the Hospital Luz y Vida. The central themes of the meeting were: "How health professionals can walk in Jesus’ footsteps today” (day 1) and "What is Jesus’ path for health professionals in the future?" (day 2).
Medical attention for the community of Loreto en Asunción
On June 23, 2009 Fundación Visión received a group of patients from the community of Loreto (6 hours north of Asunción). The trip was organized by Mr. Agustín Dominguez in coordination with the department of Community Health. Mr. Dominguez is an enthusiastic community leader who has promoted the services of Fundación Visión within his community. A total of 22 patients who had consulted previously with the Fundación were seen. 16 cataract surgeries were performed and 6 special studies were conducted. This case illustrates the value of working with community leaders who identify themselves with the mission of the Fundación Visión.
Substantial Donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints
The official ceremony of the gift of a substantial donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints to Fundación Visión took place on June 20th. The donated resources were allocated towards the purchase of a variety of very valuable medical equipment. The directors of both institutions attended the ceremony, as well as representatives of the national and local Government.
Training for health promoters from the Paraguay Foundation
As part of Fundación Visión – Fundación Paraguaya agreement, 73 new "Eye Health Promoters" (EHP) received training. These individuals will help promote the services of the Fundación Visión to locate patients who are blind due to cataracts. The newly trained promoters are loan officers and assessors of committees of rural and urban women of the Paraguay Foundation.
- First training, Saturday, June 13th, with 28 people in attendance.

Professor James Standefer visited the Fundación Visión
Professor James Standefer of the University of Minnesota visited Fundación Visión between May 25th and 29th of 2009 and conducted a workshop on glaucoma.
Foreign doctors in residency who begin their studies this year
Dra. Rameeza Candace McDonald, comes from the city of Linde, Guyana. She will begin her residency in ophthalmology this year at the Fundación Visión. She is 27 years old and is a graduate of the University of Guyana. Currently she is completing a course in intensive Spanish in order to join in the work of Fundación Visión.
Dra. Patricia Montoya Reyes, is 27 years old and is a graduate of Colegio Médico del Perú (Medical College of Peru). Her thesis to fulfill the requirements for her medical degree at the Peruvian Institute of Ophthalmology of Piura compared two different cataract surgical procedures - extracapsular extraction vs. phacoemulsification.
Convenio Fundación Visión - Universidad Católica
These activities will be adapted to the academic program and articles of the Catholic University. As a result of this initiative, the professionals and students of medicine and other degree programs that participate in the trainings of the Academic Department of Fundación Visión will receive their diplomas with the stamp of both institutions.
Recognition
The Belén clinic of Coronel Oviedo has received the "Outstanding Institution of the City of Coronel Oviedo-Visión 2008" award from the City Council and the Mayor’s Office in honor of the community assistance that it offers.
